When you write, tell us your Mac model, your macOS version, and what you were doing when the problem happened. A screen recording helps a lot.

Getting started

What do I need to run Framekeep?

A Mac running macOS 15 or later. Framekeep is free and doesn't need an account.

I opened Framekeep and nothing appeared.

Framekeep lives in your menu bar, so it has no Dock icon. Look for its icon at the top of the screen and click it for every capture command.

Framekeep says it needs Screen Recording permission.

Framekeep needs this to take screenshots and recordings. The first time you capture, macOS asks for it. If you missed the prompt, open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Screen & System Audio Recording and turn Framekeep on. macOS only applies the change after the app restarts: choose Quit & Reopen if macOS offers it, click Relaunch in Framekeep's welcome window, or quit Framekeep from the menu bar and open it again.

Capturing

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

ShortcutAction
⌥⇧⌘AAll-in-one: choose screenshot, recording, text or timer
⌥⇧⌘4Capture an area (press Space for a window, F for the whole display)
⌥⇧⌘5Capture a window
⌥⇧⌘3Capture the full screen
⌥⇧⌘RRepeat the last area
⌥⇧⌘DCapture with a timer
⌥⇧⌘OCopy text or a QR code from an area
⌥⇧⌘7Start or stop a screen recording
⌥⇧⌘CPick a color
⌥⇧⌘MMeasure the screen
⌥⇧⌘HShow history

You can change any of them in Settings ▸ Shortcuts.

Where are my captures saved?

In Pictures ▸ Framekeep, unless you choose another folder in Settings ▸ General. You can save as PNG, JPEG or HEIC.

How do I copy a table or text from the screen?

Press ⌥⇧⌘O and select the area. Framekeep copies the text, and code keeps its indentation. When it spots a table, choose Copy as Table to paste it as Markdown or CSV with its rows and columns intact.

History and search

How do I find an old screenshot?

Press ⌥⇧⌘H to open history and type a few words you remember seeing in it. Framekeep searches the text inside your captures and highlights the match.

How long is history kept?

Forever, unless you choose a limit between one week and one year in Settings ▸ General. Captures older than the limit are moved to the Trash, not deleted, so you can still recover them from there.

Privacy and redaction

What does the badge on a new capture mean?

Framekeep found details that might be sensitive, such as an email address, phone number, card number, API key, IP address or face. Click it to review them and cover them with one click.

Can I rely on automatic redaction?

Use it as a helper, not a guarantee. Detection runs on your Mac and catches common patterns, but it can miss things, so review your capture before you share it. Before you share or copy, Framekeep checks again and lets you review; you can change that check and the redaction style in Settings ▸ Privacy.

Does Framekeep upload my captures?

No. There's no account and no cloud, and the Mac App Store edition has no network access. Nothing leaves your Mac unless you share it. See the Framekeep Privacy Policy.

Recording

My recording has no sound.

Microphone and system audio are both off unless you turn them on in Settings ▸ Recording. The first time you use the microphone, macOS asks for permission; you can check it in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone.

The webcam bubble doesn't appear.

The webcam bubble is off by default. Turn it on in Settings ▸ Recording, and allow camera access when macOS asks, or later in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Camera.

Removing Framekeep

Quit Framekeep from its menu bar icon, then drag it from Applications to the Trash. Your captures are ordinary files and stay in your save folder until you delete them.
